AOW Insider: A Sourcing Journey to Northern Portugal

This past winter, I ventured to northern Portugal alongside one of the partners I represent. We journeyed to the far north of the country to hand-select new vintage pieces and explore the area’s production capabilities for wool, linen, and basketry.

As we drove through small rural villages it felt like a trip back in time. The agricultural landscape in central Portugal is breathtaking this time of year, full of lush greenery, clear blue skies, intricate grape trellises, and acres of orange trees. Winter in Portugal feels like spring on a sunny day and locals are often seen puttering in their verdant gardens.

During the trip we met several artisans who specialize in linen and wool. It was amazing to see that linen is still harvested, spun, and woven locally, although the supply is limited. You may recall the vintage black and white poufs that I posted a while back. Those sold out fast, so we were thrilled to connect with a master weaver who is reviving those designs.

Here’s a visual peek into our journey. I hope you enjoy and be in touch for wholesale ordering from AOW’s artisan partner that we represent. Email Annie at annie@aowhandmade.com for details or to see more about we can source unique, handmade goods for you. Thanks for your support.
